Crazy Quilt Christmas Stockings with Fiber Artist Ruth Clapp

Saturday, July 12th
Noon to 2:00P.M.
Age 14-adult.
Cost:  Free for Members.  Non-Members need a Day Pass.  Some supplies are needed.
Please RSVP in advance.

Learn crazy quilting and make a Christmas stocking or a panel that can be used to make a bag, vest front, or whatever. Ruth will provide the stocking pattern, instruction, and the use of her collection of scrap satins, velvets, silk, woolens, upholstery fabric, etc. Participants are encouraged to bring fabric scraps to share with the class. Used men’s ties are great sources of fine silk. If a satin blouse or a velvet skirt is stained, there are probably parts that can be cut and used. It will be helpful if you bring basic sewing supplies like scissors and straight pins, but if you don’t have them we will share.

Crazy quilts can be embellished with buttons, beads, braid, ribbons, machine or hand embroidery so any or all of those things will be useful. To finish the Christmas stocking, you will need backing and lining. The fabric used for the backing should measure about 20x12 inches, Lining fabric should measure 20x20 inches. Cotton batting measuring 20x12 inches is also needed and can be bought from the instructor in class for a small fee.

Traditionally, crazy quilts were made of silks, satins, and other highly textured fabrics, but you can chose to make them of cottons as well. Ruth recommend cottons for stockings made for children.  The White River Historical Museum in Auburn has a display of crazy quilts this summer. The display includes two Christmas stockings made by Ruth Clapp.

Stockings can be made by hand or by machine.  There are many sewing machines available at TAP for use during this class.
